Manners and Customs in South Korea

1. When greeting a South Korean person, should you look them in the eye, shake their hand, and introduce yourself? Avoidance of eye contact is a sign of respect, even though Americans view it as a lack of respect. It is usually polite to bow when greeting someone. The general rule is to bend at the waist, keeping the hands to the sides.

2. What is the proper way for foreigners to conduct business in South Korea? People who wish to be successful in business deals in South Korea need to establish a friendship first. It is important to listen, not talk too much, offer small gifts, and proceed slowly until a trust is earned.

3. What are some rules of dining in South Korea? To arrive early means to be "on time". Removing one's shoes when entering a home is the custom. When dining, your glass will be refilled unless there is still liquid in it. Koreans need to be offered food three times before accepting it. No one starts to eat until the eldest man in the house picks up his spoon and starts first

4. What should teachers be aware of with South Korean students? A person's name is written in red ink only at the time of death or the anniversary of a death. Teachers are encouraged not to use red ink for correcting papers for this reason.
